This is not your run of the mill wimpy Merlot. It’s sourced from bench and hillside
vineyards, where the grapes struggle in character-building conditions. The anchor
for this wine is Merlot grapes from Val Peline’s Terra Rosa vineyard which contribute
big abundant tannins. 1% Petit Verdot was added for depth and 0.5% Cabernet
Sauvignon for added structure. The secret to their success is treating their Merlot like
a Cabernet Sauvignon with a cold soak, extended maceration and aggressive cap
management. This wine was aged 1 year in French and American oak barrels, 13% new.
