The first winery in Priorat, Scala Dei was founded in 1163 by Carthusian monks,
who introduced vine-growing in the region. The name “Priorat” comes from the
Latin word “Prior,” the head of the Carthusian monastery founded in the village of Scala Dei. “Scala Dei” is Latin for “Ladder of God.” Today, each step of the ladder represents one of the seven villages and sub-regions of the area. Scala Dei owns and farms 100% of the grapes for their wines and has been at the forefront of a movement away from the region’s traditional dark.
A remarkable winery dating back to the 12th century, and surrounding the most distinctive “terroir” in Spain, Scala Dei produces wines of exceptional flavor and depth.
Wines from Scala Dei are among the most critically acclaimed from the region.
Crafted of Garnacha from the property’s best vineyards, Cartoixa is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Garnacha and 5% Syrah. The wine is fermented in water-cooled stainless steel tanks and undergoes maceration for three weeks to achieve optimum extraction of tannins in advance of malolactic fermentation. The wine ages for 12 months in new French oak barrels followed by an additional 12 months in bottle.
