For a while it seemed like the classic wine of Tuscany, Chianti, was lost and forgotten in the buzz of excitement surrounding the new "Supertuscans".
The traditionally styled barrel aging room at Toscolo’s winery.
It’s true, Chianti has been around for hundreds of years, and hotshot Supertuscans fetching hundreds of dollars a bottle quickly caught the attention of press and consumers alike.
The old and the new, tradition and modernity have found a harmonious balance on the hillsides of Tuscany, and Chianti has reclaimed its rightful role as the region’s flagship wine.
Toscolo is a young winery (by Italian standards!), and the result of a longtime love affair between wine importers Neil and Maria Empson and their beloved Tuscany.
Created in 1990 by the Empsons and renowned oenologist Franco Bernabei, the name itself pays homage to Tuscany. "Toscolo" is a word from Renaissance Italian meaning "Tuscan boy".
Toscolo Chianti are crafted in the traditional style in a modern winery equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment. The grapes come from some of Chianti’s best terroirs.
Vineyard management is an important element at Toscolo. Vines are planted at very high density. This creates more competition between vines so the yields are naturally lower. Lower yields means more flavorful concentrated grapes that in turn produce better wines.
Wood has traditionally been used in Chianti, but the Empsons and their winemaker, Franco Bernabei prefer to use it sparingly in their wines. In this wine, the fruit holds center stage.
The result is a fresh, lusciously fruity red wine that is extremely food friendly. You can serve this wine with just about anything from basic pasta in a marinara sauce to roast chicken with risotto or even grilled beef.
