Deep ruby red with shades of violet. Rich with fruit, the nose is reminiscent of plums and blackberries. Tannins as soft as velvet set the stage for an enviably round finish. Enjoy with grilled steaks, roasts and pasta in richly-flavored sauces.

Situated on a high plateau in the Uco Valley of Argentina’s Mendoza region, the El Portillo winery and vineyards are at the cutting edge of Argentine winemaking. Bodega El Portillo (El Portillo means “portal” or “gateway”) epitomizes their dedication to harmony with nature. It’s constructed of local materials, including stones quarried from a nearby valley. Ancient masonry techniques mastered by the indigenous population were revived for its construction providing new and welcome opportunities for skilled local craftsmen. The entire winery is designed to allow gravity flow to move the wine from harvest to bottle.
The Malbec grapes were grown in very select plots in the estate vineyard Finca El Portillo, at 1,100 meters above sea level. Alluvial soils lay atop a gravel bed, with good permeability and drainage. The grapes were hand-harvested at the optimum ripening point, approximately 24° brix. After gentle de-stemming and selection, the berries were placed in stainless steel tanks, where fermentation and maceration with select yeasts took place to preserve the fruity character of the variety. After fermentation, the wine was racked by gravity into stainless steel tanks, avoiding the need to pump.
