Stemming from an old-established wine tradition, the Skalli family has been in southern France since 1961. In the early 80s, they visited California and, in the Napa Valley north of San Francisco, discovered a new approach to winemaking where a single variety of grape was used to express the personality of a wine. Back in France, they took the bold decision to introduce varietal wines to the South, where there were myriad unexploited terroirs. This innovating idea was revolutionary for a French wine industry tradition based on the AOC. Its relevance won over winegrowers and they began to plant Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties. Nearly two decades later, the avant-garde Fortant is in the prime of life! The pioneer brand of French varietal wine has honed its skills and is as ever the best value for money in prime wines. The crisp trend-setting sophistication of its latest bottle design shows its intention to give French varietal wines new powers of appeal.
In the early eighties, the Skalli family decided to work in close collaboration with selected growers of the South of France to plant Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot et Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. This partnership with winegrowers that has lasted for over 30 years. Fortant's winegrowers are committed to following a rigorous charter of ecological sustainability in the vineyard. All their wines are harvested on selected soils in the South of France: chalk, clay and gravel hillsides and terraces between Montpellier and Carcassonne. A blend of grapes grown in complementary vineyards ensures the unique character of each Fortant wine.
