Cantine Volpi, producer of Costa Al Sole, is a family enterprise; the foundations of this Company can be traced back to a woman: Cristina Cairo, wife to Giovanni Volpi. Since the beginning of the 90’s, the Company has maintained the current “frontline” with Carlo Volpi, third generation of the family, as President and Managing Director.

Cantine Volpi’s wine-making premises are located in Viguzzolo, just outside Tortona. Here the grapes are transformed with the utmost care, the temperature of fermentation and each single stage in the production being controlled meticulously. The cellars where they complete their maturation are located in the out-skirts of Tortona, where an extensive variety of several ageing barrels (stainless steel, large Slavonian oak casks and small French oak barriques) are used to develop the wines as attractive, elegant and pleasurable, to meet the consumer’s growing demand for fruity, well-developed and quality wines.

In 1999, Volpi started the project of producing Organic Wines, as the new venture of the Wine Industry to preserve the environment. Unlike long established vineyards and wineries, they established the organic portfolio at a time of public concern for environmental issues. Volpi’s team of agronomists works very close with the local growers. They use a form of "clean" agriculture without using any pesticides and chemical substances in accordance with the rules set by the organic bodies. The main objective is to maintain a healthy and biologically active soil. Only natural fertilizers, such as composted animal manure are used and they encourage natural predators of insect pests.

Volpi’s team of oenologists is lead by Federico Riolfo. They follow a natural philosophy: do not use any sub fining agents except from bentonite that comes from chalk and mostly no need to add sugar and to use only natural yeasts. Minimizing the use of sulfur dioxide as an antioxidant is stringently observed. The certification of the wines is made by I.C.E.A. (the Italian institute for ethic and environmental certification), which guarantees the observance of European Community standards.
