Beringer's history dates back to the year 1868, when Jacob Beringer, enticed by the opportunities of the new world, sailed from his home in Mainz, Germany, to New York. However, after hearing that the rocky hillside soil and fertile valley floor resembled that of vineyards back home in Germany, Jacob made his way to the Napa Valley. Jacob and his brother Frederick purchased 215 acres of land in 1875, and became one of the first wineries in Napa Valley.
Since 1876, Beringer has been a pioneer in California winemaking. There were the first winery to experiment with gravity-flow fermentation techniques; they dug the first naturally temperature-controlled caves by hand in the 1880s; and were the first winery to open our doors to tourism after Prohibition. In the 1960s they pioneered vineyard development in Knights Valley, a small and ruggedly beautiful region just northwest of the Beringer winery. Then in the 1970s, at the start of Central Coast winemaking, they started developing our holdings in this region.
Stone Cellars by Beringer is a new line of smooth classically structured varietal wines that reflect the tradition of quality set forth 125 years ago by Jacob Beringer. In the decades since then, Beringer has been at the forefront viniculture and winemaking innovation to ensure consistent high quality across all product lines, and these new wines are no exception.
