Additional Information

They are called “petits chateaux.” They are some of the smaller, lesser known wine estates in the Bordeaux appellation of France, and even though they fly under the radar, they’re known for crafting some of the finest wines on Earth. One such estate is Chateau Barreyre, a 22-acre property with a view of the Gironde and nearby port of Macau. It lies within the Medoc, quite close to the acclaimed Chateau Margaux. The vineyard is farmed so as to produce very low yields, which concentrates the aromas and flavors in the grapes. In fact, yields are lower than for many of Bordeaux’s classified growths — which typically cost three times as much.Chateau Barreyre’s 2011 “Bordeaux Superieur” is a Merlot-based blend that mirrors many Margaux cuvees. Serve it with grilled salmon filets and a cold couscous salad for a wonderful taste of the Mediterranean from an under-the-radar Bordeaux estate. 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Petit Verdot.
