“Rías Baixas” refers to the low estuaries along the coast of lower Galicia. The beautiful green inlets are reminiscent of Scandinavian fjords and are distinctly unique in Spain.
This small, and fairly recent DO is now home to some of Spain’s most famous white wines. In this lush verdant landscape of rivers and terraced vineyards the Albariño grape rules.
Some believe it to be a relative of German riesling and may have been brought to Spain by pilgrims on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in the Middle Ages. This theory is disputed by others however.
Aromatic Albariño grows in small clusters of grapes that achieve very high sugar levels while maintaining a high degree of acidity. The wines are remarkably long-lived and more complex than the average white wine.
Martín Códax is a modern winery, founded by a group of winegrowers in 1986. All of the grapes come from their own vineyards which are meticulously cared for over the entire growth cycle.
Winemaker Luciano Amoedo is one of the founding partners and continues to be quite active in promoting the wines of the Rías Baixas. He’s most often found in the winecellar, which he’s filled with the latest leading-edge technology to bring out the purity of the Albariño grape’s flavors.
On a romantic note, the winery takes its name from a 13th century Galician minstrel whose poetry evokes chivalrous love and a typical Galician passion for the sea. They are the oldest Portuguese poems which have come down to us with their original music preserved.
