Douglass Hill Merlot
A great value, this wine pulls no punches with its straightforward bright strawberry and raspberry aromas. The flavors mirror the bouquet with soft red fruits on the palate; lightweight, silky tannins and a silky, smooth finish. Quite quaffable.

Who else but Fred Franzia could bring you a bottle of Merlot from Napa Valley at this price?
Napa Valley is one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions. Here the cover crop of mustard turns the vineyards into a spectacular scene.
The Bronco Wine Company is one of the largest wine producers in the US. The company’s most talked about wine is "Two Buck Chuck," the famous (or infamous) Charles Shaw wine that turned the wine world on its head when it was introduced at $2/bottle at Trader Joe's California stores.
So it should come as no surprise that this California Merlot, from Napa Valley of all places, is at such a great price.
What makes Merlot so popular? The medical studies showing strong links between moderate wine consumption and a healthy lifestyle are behind the surge in red wine consumption and Merlot is often the wine of choice because of its soft, approachable character with luscious red fruit.
Merlot is widely planted, fairly easy to grow under almost any conditions. It was brought to California from France in the mid-19th century. Historically, vintners used Merlot as a blending grape, usually with Cabernet Sauvignon, to soften the wine. Merlot tannins are less forceful than Cabernet Sauvignon, so Merlot wine tends to mature earlier.
