San Pedro also benefits from the experience of renowned flying winemaker Paul Hobbs, considered one of the best oenologists in America. Paul has assumed the role of consultant winemaker to Viña San Pedro.
While the entire team is incredibly talented, it’s young Carlos Chandía who is responsible for Gato Negro wines.
Carlos Chandía graduated from the Universidad Católica de Chile as an agronomic engineer. He is specialized in oenology and an active member of the Oenologist Agronomic Engineer Association of Chile.
Although his first professional practice was in exports, controlling the quality of table grapes, he very quickly became interested in the wine industry, working first in Viña Caliterra, as assistant winemaker at La Arboleda Winery.
Following his new passion, he traveled to France where he worked harvests in Burgundy to hone his skills and learn more about the production of fine wines.
He has worked as a winemaker at the Molina Estate of Viña San Pedro since 2001 assuming several positions and working his way up to being named chief winemaker in charge of the Gato Negro line.
The entire winemaking team is involved in a major effort to research, classify and better understand the diverse terroirs of Chile’s wine regions and to match the grape varietals best suited to each of these regions.
Organic wine production is another important area of continuing research and development. San Pedro owns almost 100 acres of certified organic vineyards with more coming into production soon.
